Celebrating 125 years
The City of Belmont is commemorating 125 years as a local government in 2024.
Help us celebrate our anniversary and also reflect on our shared history that extends far beyond the last 125 years with a range of events and activities.
To Dwell in Unity - November 2023
The first event to commemorate the anniversary was a talk by Dr Chris Berry at Ruth Faulkner Library on 29 November 2023 entitled ‘To Dwell in Unity’. Dr Berry looked at how the City of Belmont was formed and how local government has changed to become more than just ‘roads, rates and rubbish’.
Civic Dinner - December 2023
The City’s Civic Dinner in early December acknowledged a timeline of notable milestones in the City of Belmont’s past including the establishment of the first election for the Belmont Roads Board, the resident-led call for the first public pool “Clayden Aquatic Centre” in the City in 1971, and the groundbreaking for the iconic Belmont Hub in 2020.
125 Year Teddy Bear Picnic - January 2024
Ruth Faulkner Library hosted a 125 year celebratory Teddy Bear Picnic for our younger community members.
Our history
The history of the City of Belmont is woven from the countless stories of those who have called this place home.
From our First Nations communities who nurtured the land for thousands of years to new arrivals seeking new opportunities, each have contributed their unique traditions, stuggles, and triumphs to make the City of Belmont what it is today.
The City of Belmont’s journey to becoming a local government started on 2 December 1898 when the Belmont Roads Board was proclaimed in the Government Gazette. Elections were held and the first meeting of the Roads Board was held on 12 April 1899.
